Norway & Nordkapp

Northern soul food

Duration: nine or 15 days  Distance: 1930 or 3465 miles  Average daily ride: ±6.25hrs

Nordkapp! The name alone inspires thoughts of adventure – the most-northerly point of continental Europe accessible by road, deep within the Arctic Circle. The only way there is through a wild landscape of towering mountains, fjords, wild expanses of moorland where reindeer are more common than cafés…

The only catch? It's a helluva long way away from the UK. This tour, built with a lot of input from local riders and tested multiple times over the past three summers, is 15 days from landing in Norway to finishing in Sweden – so by the time you've added travel to Denmark and back again, this is a three-week trip.

But don't despair if you have only two weeks. The nine-day Norway tour (that's nine days in Norway) will fit in with a fortnight's holiday. It packs in all the best bits of the fjords and the wild countryside, with day after day of unforgettable riding.

Everyone who's done either tour on the test runs has said, essentially, the same thing: it's one of the best things I've ever done on a motorbike.

What are the highlights? Obviously, getting to Nordkapp is a massive tick on every adventurer's bucket list, but along the way the full tour includes a memorable boat trip (a guaranteed highlight) to unlock the otherworldly glory of the Lotofen Islands. Both tours take in the Trollstigen pass, the Atlantic Highway and a host of amazing panoramic roads through the fjords and mountains. It's basically sold highlights from end to end.

What’s included on the route? Each day’s route includes recommended places to stop for coffee in the morning and afternoon, with a suggested lunch stop and planned fuel stops (upto 140miles apart). Tourist attractions along the way are highlighted, so you can pick which to visit. Hotel recommendations are included, too.

The tour pack does not include the routes to and from the start/finish points – purely to keep the costs down. Most people will just motorway the whole way there and back, so you don't need me for that bit.

How long is each day’s ride? These are longer days than many other tours – did I mention it's nearly 3500 miles? Each day will have you doing more six hours in the saddle, which is long enough to cover the ground while still keeping the riding entertaining and leaving enough time to stop and soak up the sights, without it becoming an arse-numbing, mile-munching slog. Saddle-time rating: eight out of 10.

When to go: Norway famously has four seasons: June; July; August; and winter. So this is definitely a summer trip. Though it can of course snow on any day of the year when you get that far north… So pack your waterproofs and your sunscreen.

How is it supplied? Each download consists of a zip file containing individual GPX files for each day of the route and an interactive eBook of notes that contains hotel recommendations, a preview of the route and turn-by-turn directions. There is also a more-basic set of black-and-white directions to print out for the tankbag; a marked-up paper map will follow by post (with a set of these) – but please note that the map is prepared to order, so there may be a delay in getting it in the post if I'm on the road at the time.
